Jyoti Madhusoodanan, an award-winning journalist with more than 13 years of experience, joins AHCJ as its first program manager.

In this role, she will work to enhance AHCJ’s varied fellowship programs, helping journalists grow by providing them with training and opportunities that give them time, resources and support to dive deeper into health reporting.

“We are so excited to welcome Jyoti to the team,” said Kelsey Ryan, AHCJ’s executive director. “Her deep journalism experience will strengthen the support we provide our members and help us take our fellowship programs to the next level. Journalists need more support and professional development than ever — not just for skills, but for building community and staying in the field.”

Madhusoodanan has been an independent journalist since 2014, covering science and health for The New York Times, Scientific American, Nature, Undark magazine and many other outlets. Her work has been supported by fellowships and grants from MIT’s Knight Science Journalism Program, the Alicia Patterson Foundation, the Pulitzer Center and others. She has mentored journalists covering science and health through programs at The Open Notebook, the National Association of Science Writers and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

“Much of my work has been sustained by fellowships that provided funding, mentors and a community that keeps faith in the value of journalism,” Madhusoodanan said. “I’m honored to be working with AHCJ to grow these forms of support for journalists.”

Madhusoodanan was previously the Doris Duke Racial Equity in Clinical Equations Civic Science Fellow at AHCJ. She is an alumna of the University of Santa Cruz science journalism program and holds a doctorate in microbiology from the University at Buffalo, New York. Madhusoodanan also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Science Writers.
