Need help getting to the next AHCJ event? We may be able to offer a limited amount of travel assistance outside of our formal fellowships through the Pia Christensen Conference Assistance Scholarship. PCCA Scholarships are available to help defray some — but not all — associated expenses for those interested in attending AHCJ events.

For the upcoming Reporting on Violence as a Public Health Issue: An AHCJ Summit in Chicago (Oct. 27-28), we can offer some financial assistance in the form of lodging at the event hotel and in some cases, a travel stipend to help offset some expenses. If you are awarded room nights, we will make your reservation under our room block. If a travel stipend is offered, we will confirm your acceptance and have a check waiting for you at check in for the event.

If you have received a fellowship or are attending the event in some capacity that has already provided for some assistance (speaker, panelist, etc.), you may not be eligible to receive additional funding.

You must be registered to attend the event to be considered for the PCCA scholarship. Priority for scholarships will be given to current AHCJ members and prospective members.

If you need some assistance to attend, please complete the form below, including a brief statement of what type of assistance is needed and why, and submit it to AHCJ by 5 p.m. CT, Monday, Sept. 26, 2022.

About the Scholarship

In May 2021, AHCJ lost a friend and colleague, Pia Christensen, to cancer. Pia, who was 50 when she died, served as managing editor/online services for 15 years and was part of the Missouri School of Journalism staff for 20 years.

Pia was especially enthusiastic about AHCJ’s annual conference and would have been very supportive of any effort making it easier for people to attend AHCJ trainings. For the 2022 conference, AHCJ established a travel assistance scholarship in Pia’s name to memorialize her contributions to AHCJ.

This scholarship has allowed us to offer a limited amount of travel assistance aside from our formal fellowship programs for those members who might need some help with costs.
