Advocacy Organizations

  • Firearm Violence

Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence
This group is a nonprofit focused on preventing firearm violence. Among their initiatives are efforts to challenge the gun lobby in court and campaigns advocating for safer gun storage in homes. Founded in 1974, Brady is one of the oldest gun violence prevention organizations in the U.S.

Brady recently created a resource guide for doctors featuring practical tips and strategies for talking to patients about firearm access.

Everytown for Gun Safety
A nonprofit that advocates for stronger policies to prevent firearm violence, endorses “gun sense” candidates and supports research on the causes of firearm violence and solutions. The group was formed in 2013 by merging Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.

Giffords
An organization that brings together political, legal and policy expertise to the fight for gun safety and advocate for gun safety policies. It is led by former U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), who was shot in the head at a 2011 constituent event by a gunman who killed six people and injured 12 others.

The Hope and Heal Fund
A California-based philanthropic organization taking a public health approach to preventing gun violence. The organization’s stated mission is “to harness the collective power of individuals, communities, corporate leaders, government, and philanthropy to ensure homes and communities are safe and free from death, injury, and trauma due to firearm violence.”

Moms Demand Action
A nonprofit founded by Shannon Watts after the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. The organization advocates for stronger firearm safety measures and pushes for stronger state and federal laws on guns. The group is a part of Everytown for Gun Safety and has a chapter in every state and Washington, D.C.

Safer Homes Collaborative
The collaborative employs a credible messenger model when talking about firearm suicide prevention and safe gun storage. It’s a joint effort between firearm owners and suicide prevention advocates to raise awareness that suicide can be prevented through safe firearm storage. It was established to implement a suicide prevention education program for owners and staff at gun shops, shooting ranges and other organizations in frequent contact with firearm owners. The organization has field coordinators, who have training and expertise in firearms, to engage in conversations about suicide prevention, safe storage and offer trainings and resources.

Sandy Hook Promise
A nonprofit founded and led by several family members who lost loved ones killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012, in Newtown, Conn. The group’s intention is to honor all victims of gun violence and encourage meaningful action to prevent gun violence.

The Trevor Project
A suicide prevention and crisis intervention nonprofit organization for LGBTQ+ young people. The organization provides information and support to LGBTQ+ young people 24/7, all year round through its hotline, which can be reached via chat, text or phone. The Trevor Project also advocates for policies that help prevent suicide among LGBTQ+ young people through legislation, litigation and public education. The organization also supports LGBTQ+ mental health and suicide research.

Violence Policy Center
The Center focuses on gun violence prevention through research, education, advocacy and collaboration. It covers the daily impacts of gun violence, regulating the gun industry and investigating the gun lobby. Their research also provides guidance on actionable public policy ideas for the local, state and national levels.
