The primary care triple double

To establish a strong foundation for primary care in the United States, researchers borrowed a basketball term, “triple double.” In primary care, a triple double would mean doubling performance in three areas: 

• Primary care investment 
• The portion of the U.S. population getting care in community health centers
• The share of new physicians selecting primary care as a specialty, the Milbank Memorial Fund explained in a February 2026 report, “Investing in Primary Care: The Missing Strategy in America’s Fight Against Chronic Disease.”
