This seminar features Dr. Paula Braveman, a professor of family and community medicine and director of the Center on Social Disparities in Health at the University of California-San Francisco.
“Health disparities do not refer to all possible health differences,” Braveman says, “nor do they refer to all health differences that warrant concerted public policy attention; they are a specific subset of health differences that are relevant to social justice. Health disparities are systematic, plausibly avoidable health differences adversely affecting socially and economically disadvantaged groups. Health disparities may reflect social disadvantage, but their causes need not be established. They are unfair in that they place already socially disadvantaged groups at further disadvantage with respect to their health.”
Braveman will provide an overview of the concept of health disparities and a conceptual framework for thinking about how disparities are created, exacerbated, and perpetuated across lifetimes and generations.
The seminar is 3-4:30 p.m. in the Masur Auditorium, Natcher Conference Center, Building 45, 10 Center Drive, Bethesda, Md.
