The John Alexander Project and NPR jointly operate the Above the Fray fellowship, designed for promising early-career journalists who want to report a significant story from an underreported region of the world. One fellow is selected each year.

Those with at least five but no more than seven years of journalism experience are eligible to apply. The final story will air on NPR if it meets its standards.

The total duration of the fellowship is five to six months, with two months spent reporting in the field. The fellowship covers all production and living expenses for the duration.

Application deadline: July 1, 2023
