When a Love For Stuff Turns Into an Obsession

This package was one in a year-long project (non-serialized) exploring different mental disorders, brain science and stigma. The general goal was twofold: first, to provide a humanizing “360-degree perspective” of the disorder by profiling an individual, his spouse and a friend/former housemate who could personalize the HD journey and secondly, to educate readers by delving into the psycho-social and medical roots of the disorder, the types of attachment that present with it and the available treatment options. A more specific goal was to explore HD in a younger adult, not often covered by print or broadcast outlets (e.g., “Hoarders.”) A chronic disorder, HD gets progressively worse with many people not receiving treatment until third party intervention occurs later in life. The package sought to highlight the possibility and hope of an earlier recovery. Please Note: This feature included a side box list of local and national resources for readers that was embedded to the left of the feature but did not carry over during the Online-to-PDF conversion. I did not want to risk exceeding the rule of a maximum of four related attachments, so I left it out. ALSO: Scripps requires a subscription to access its online content. I’ve included the links with each of the PDFs, but judges may be unable to access the full content online without a subscription.
