Those With Autism Navigate a Foreign World

This package was part of a year-long project (non-serialized) exploring different neuro-developmental brain disorders, the related science and associated stigma. The general goal was twofold: first, to humanize the disorder by profiling individuals who could personalize the experience of the illness without sensationalism and illustrate that great accomplishment is possible notwithstanding brain differences. Secondly, to educate readers by delving into the medical roots of the disorder, its symptoms, stigma and available treatment options. For this piece, Dr. Temple Grandin, Dawn Prince-Hughes, Ph.D., and a young man named William with Asperger’s Syndrome were profiled. Please Note: This feature included a side box list of local and national resources for readers that was embedded to the left of the feature but did not carry over during the Online-to-PDF conversion. I did not want to exceed the stated maximum of four related attachments, so I left it out. ALSO: Scripps requires a subscription to access its online content. I’ve included the links with each of the PDFs, but judges may be unable to access the full content without a subscription.
