The Lost Girls

Autism is frequently seen as a disorder that affects only boys or men. We know much less about how autism affects girls and women. Using powerful stories of three women–Maya, Lula and Leigh–and emerging science in this field, this story takes us through what it is like to be a woman with autism. The central thesis is that when autism’s symptoms intersect with gender, the lived experience of a woman with autism can be dramatically different from that of a man with the same condition.
