Massachusetts’ landmark law requiring insurance coverage for in vitro fertilization is widely praised, but significant gaps remain. More than one in four women of reproductive age in the state lack fertility coverage, and even those who are covered face restrictions and barriers. The law excludes people on MassHealth, limiting access for low-income, working-class, and disabled individuals and disproportionately affecting minority groups. As a result, IVF births in Massachusetts are far more likely among white and Asian families than Black or Hispanic families.
