Provide a brief synopsis of the story or stories, including any significant findings.
This radio feature explored the consequences for Missouri’s working poor if the state legislature decides not to expand the state’s Medicaid program as envisioned under the Affordable Care Act.
Explain types of documents, data or Internet resources used. Were FOI or public records act requests required? How did this affect the work?
I used the internet to gather information about Missouri’s Medicaid program, and federal Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act. I collected statistics and background information from sources including the Urban Institute, the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured, and the Missouri Foundation for Health, among many others.
Explain types of human sources used.
I interviewed two patients at a St. Louis health clinic who currently do not qualify for Medicaid, but would under the expansion. Other interviewees included their clinic doctor, and two Missouri politicians who are against Medicaid expansion. I also spoke with several health policy experts for additional background information on Medicaid and Medicaid expansion.
Results:
N/A – the Missouri legislature will not vote on Medicaid expansion until 2013.
Follow-up (if any). Have you run a correction or clarification on the report or has anyone come forward to challenge its accuracy? If so, please explain.

Advice to other journalists planning a similar story or project.
It was critical to get the personal perspective of people directly affected by Medicaid expansion (the two patients and their doctor).
