We looked at a Houston doctor named Stanislaw Burzynski, who for 36 years has claimed to be able to treat many otherwise incurable cancers — although the National Cancer Institute says there’s no definitive evidence that he’s ever cured anyone. We also examined his relationship with the Food and Drug Administration, which has allowed him to operate a clinical trial for 17 years. On our web site, usatoday.com, we included several additional elements beyond that offered in print: 1. An interactive graphic/video featuring a timeline of Burzynski’s 36-year history; videos with former patients and an oncologist familiar with Burzynski’s work; additional details about his personal story and history with the FDA. 2. A photo gallery featuring several former patients telling their own stories. 3. Links to dozens of primary-source materials used in our investigation, posted to Document Cloud.
