Provide a brief synopsis of the story or stories, including any significant findings.

In medical sciences expert knowledge has to be conveyed by mass-media to the audience in a clear and understandable way, without affecting scientific strictness. However many journalists, who are unskilled and not properly trained to explore medical topics, often divulge medical news in a very approximate and incomplete way. Information on zoonoses, food safety, and health on workplace has been often presented in a frightening way, so enhancing public’s concern. Such communication strategy may change customers’ attitudes, which in turn may strongly impact local and global economy. At the present time, it seems necessary for the scientific journalist to be properly prepared in medical topics. Moreover, a stronger link between medical experts and news-makers should be emphasized. This paper shows how risk communication of public health issues may dramatically affect public’s perception and attitudes. Recent examples of mass-media’s distortions when treating public health issues are presented. Practical solutions to face risk communication in medical sciences are discussed in the light of the “One Medicine Approach”.

Results:

It is clear that mass-media play crucial roles in shaping public responses to health-related news. Health communication should adhere to the principle of beneficence, non-maleficience, respect for personal autonomy, and justice. Complex explanation should be balanced by the ability of the public to comprehend and by informative detail that does not overload the public. Sources should be checked for reputation of the individual and reliability.
