Public health adapting to Low German Mennonite population

Thousands of Low German speaking Mennonites have moved to Kansas. They are open to accepting public health services, but local health departments and the state health agency have not learned how best to communicate the availability of the services and the expectation that the immigrants receive them.

There have been a few news stories written over the last five years or so about this population; they
rarely accept interview requests and truly live in isolation. This story took a different angle than
others – most population health stories written about those who live in southwest Kansas focus on
Hispanic immigrants from Mexico. This group too moved north to find agriculture work, but are
historically and culturally a very different population.
