Provide a brief synopsis of the story or stories, including any significant findings.

This story profiles a long-time survivor of Hodgkin’s lymphoma, who describes the secondary cancers and other late effects of her cancer treatment. The compelling personal narrative provides an entry point to define “late effects” of cancer treatment and discuss new methods for limiting, tracking and treating them.

Explain types of documents, data or Internet resources used. Were FOI or public records act requests required? How did this affect the work?

CDC report on number of living cancer survivors, academic journal articles on changes in protocol for treatment of Hodgkin’s lymphoma and on cardiac complications and secondary cancers linked to the cancer’s treatment, Livestrong cancer survivorship program website, WebMD definition of aortic valve stenosis

Explain types of human sources used.

Ann Marie Wiesen, 30-year cancer survivor, for a personal narrative. Ann Marie’s mother, to talk about her daughter’s cancer treatment 30 years ago. Dr. Joe Carver, cardiologist and chief of staff at the University of Pennsylvania’s Abramson Cancer Center, to talk about cardiac disease resulting from cancer treatment. Dr. Jill Ginsberg, director of the cancer survivorship care program at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, talking about current pediatric survivorship care and growth in the field in the recent past.

Results:

Positive listener/ reader feedback on Ann Marie’s personal story.

Follow-up (if any). Have you run a correction or clarification on the report or has anyone come forward to challenge its accuracy? If so, please explain.

No.

Advice to other journalists planning a similar story or project.

Provide more reference materials for listeners online, to more explicitly describe the connection between certain types of cancer treatment and possible late effects (possibly in chart or graph form).
