Lois M. Collins’ Beat Reporting

“Protecting patients” looks at Utah’s badly broken system of medical error reporting. The state has actually promised hospitals that if they will talk about their screw ups, it will help keep their secrets. But even with that juicy enticement, underreporting is blatant. The story (which had two sidebars) looks at what the state’s doing right and how not reporting errors hurts patients and healthcare in general. “The Voice” is the story of a prominent Utah lawyer and clergyman, long noted for his “huge” oratorial style, who lost his voicebox to cancer. He’s had to rethink everything and find new ways to be “the voice” – muted now, but arguably more powerful than ever. “Keeping Katie sated, safe” is a look at one family’s daily battle with 3-year-old Katie’s Prader- Willie syndrome. She’s obsessed with food and they’re obsessed with keeping her safe. “Genetics Giant” is the breaking news story from the announcement that University of Utah professor Mario R. Capecchi won the Nobel Prize in Medicine.
