How Obamacare Went South In Mississippi

This story is a deep and far-reaching examination of the systemic governmental failures of the first year of implementation of the Affordable Care Act in Mississippi, the nation’s poorest, least-healthy and most segregated state.

Using extensive on-the-ground interviews, close analysis of the state’s health-care performance, its complicated political past and current political crosswinds, “How Obamacare Went South In Mississippi” uncovered a series of cascading problems, including bumbling errors and misinformation; ignorance and disorganization; a haunting racial divide; and, above all, the unyielding ideological imperative of conservative politics.

This story is a blunt, unbiased indictment of the forces inside Mississippi that crippled President Obama’s signature health care law in a state that perhaps had the most to gain, and remains, to this day, trapped in a severe, intractable and perpetual health-care crisis.
