This nine-part series covers an initiative by a coalition of providers serving uninsured populations in Athens, Ga. The proposal is to replicate in Athens a nonprofit medical discount network that has been operating successfully in Nevada for nearly eight years. Student reporters went to Reno to find what benefits such a plan might hold for problems rampant among the working poor in Athens, and what its implications would be for local hospitals and providers. They found significant promise for good and few drawbacks for low-wage workers, small businesses or local providers.
