Comparative Effectiveness Research Fellows named for 2019

About Cynthia Craft

Cynthia Craft (@cynthiahcraft) is the director of engagement for AHCJ, joining the organization after an extensive career in daily journalism, including a decade on the health care beat. Craft most recently worked as a senior writer at The Sacramento Bee, having also worked for the Los Angeles Times, Dallas Times Herald and the California Journal.

Thirteen journalists have been selected for the 2019 class of the AHCJ Fellowship on Comparative Effectiveness Research. The fellowship program was created with support from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to help reporters and editors produce more accurate, in-depth stories on medical research and how treatment decisions are made.

The fellows will gather in Washington, D.C., the week of Sept. 9 for four days of presentations, how-to database sessions and discussions with researchers.

Ivan Oransky, M.D., president of AHCJ’s board of directors, and Maryn McKenna, an AHCJ board member, were among the speakers at the World Conference of Science Journalists in Lausanne, Switzerland, on July 2.

Oransky, who is vice president, editorial at Medscape and Distinguished Writer In Residence at New York University’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute, spoke about reporting on scientific fraud, something he regularly covers for Retraction Watch. Continue reading

D.C. journalists gather for annual summer reception

Kimberly Leonard (@leonardkl) is a member of AHCJ’s Right to Know Committee and co-chair of the Washington, D.C., chapter. She covers Congress, the White House, and the Department of Health and Human Services as a health care reporter for the Washington Examiner.

Members of the Washington, D.C., chapter of the Association of Health Care Journalists gathered over food and beverages on June 13 for their annual happy hour with health care communications professionals.

The sixth annual event was hosted by the National Pharmaceutical Council, with about 130 people attending. In the past the event had been held on the rooftop overlooking the White House, but for the first time the event needed to be moved indoors because of stormy weather.
