The boards of the Association of Health Care Journalists and the Center for Excellence in Health Care Journalism will see the return of four familiar faces and gain two new ones. New board members begin their terms on Sept. 1.
The new members are Max Blau, reporter for ProPublica, and Joanne Kenen, independent journalist and Journalist in Residence at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Blau is an investigative journalist with 15 years of experience covering health across the southern United States. A three-time AHCJ fellowship participant and former Right-to-Know Committee member, he has earned national recognition for his reporting, including an AHCJ Award and being part of a Pulitzer Prize finalist team, while also giving back through mentoring, moderating conference panels and supporting the next generation of health reporters.
Kenen is an award-winning health journalist with decades of experience covering health policy, politics and public health. A longtime AHCJ member, she served as the organization’s first Health Beat topic leader, co-chairs the Washington, D.C., chapter, and has been a dedicated mentor, conference moderator and webinar leader for more than 15 years.
Those returning to the board are MedPage Today Washington Editor Joyce Frieden (At-Large Member and Right to Know Committee co-chair), Renuka Rayasam, Senior Correspondent, KFF Health News and Jonathan Rockoff, Deputy Corporate Editor for The Wall Street Journal (Contest committee co-chairs), and independent journalist Randy Dotinga.
We also extend our heartfelt thanks to departing board members Laura Beil and Carrie Feibel, who conclude four and eight years of service, respectively. Beil served as board treasurer for two years, while Feibel previously chaired the Contest Committee. We are deeply grateful to both Laura and Carrie for their leadership, expertise and unwavering commitment to strengthening health journalism.
Board members have two-year terms and no term limits. Only AHCJ’s professional members can vote in board elections or run for the board. Members participated in the election via email ballot from June 15 through July 16.
