Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1s) have transformed how physicians manage the care of patients who are obese or have type 2 diabetes mellitus, an analysis in Pharmaceutical Research showed. Derived from the hormone GLP-1, these agents mimic the hormone’s physiological effects, enhancing glucose-dependent insulin secretion, suppressing glucagon release, delaying gastric emptying and promoting satiety, thereby helping patients reduce body weight and improve cardiovascular outcomes, researchers noted.
