Chickenless Chicken Shows? Bird Flu Reshapes County Fairs and 4-H Kids Make Do

At the Santa Cruz County Fair, a bird flu outbreak forced officials to ban live chicken shows, disrupting a long-running 4-H tradition where kids typically present and handle their own birds. Instead, young competitors used stuffed chickens and submitted videos, missing the hands-on experience that helps teach animal care and responsibility.

The ban reflects broader concerns about highly contagious H5N1 avian influenza, which has killed hundreds of millions of birds and led to strict biosecurity measures in agriculture. Experts say allowing poultry to gather at fairs could spread the disease to other animals or commercial farms, even as they acknowledge the educational loss for children.

Judges’ comments:

We thought this was a superior piece because it was an important and unexpected story at the intersection of several spheres: Agri-business, contagious disease and consumer eating habits. We liked its energy and pacing and fresh feel. The kids were adorable, which drew us into a serious and neglected subject – the continuing impacts of avian flu. There’s also an interesting subcurrent with the kids — if they get the seriousness, why doesn’t everyone? It was creatively written and had good ambient sound that put listeners at the fair and made us care about the issue.
