Agentic AI

  • Health IT

Agentic artificial intelligence (AI) is a type of AI that can complete tasks independently. Once it is programmed with natural language instructions, this type of AI system can follow a person’s commands but also make decisions on its own, with little human supervision. The systems also can interpret and understand their surroundings through various sensors and data inputs, and also can learn from their experiences, take in feedback and adjust their behavior accordingly. They can be used for complex tasks like optimizing supply chain or analyzing live stock prices to perform predictive analytics and execute trades. In autonomous vehicles, their data sources like GPS can work to improve navigation and safety.

Deeper Dive

In health care, agentic AI agents can monitor patient data, adjust treatment recommendations based on new test results and provide real-time feedback to clinicians through chatbots. A company called Hippocratic AI has an AI agent named Judy that helps patients with preoperative procedures by reminding them about arrival time and locations, or advising on pre-op fasting or stopping medications.

The agents also could analyze clinical notes to identify critical findings; decode genomic data from biopsy samples; or help interpret medical imaging data to detect metastases.
