Suicide prevention involves several efforts used to reduce the risk of suicide. Those methods are wide-ranging and can include recognizing warning signs, preventing a person experiencing suicidal ideation from accessing lethal means, providing mental health services and other social supports and prescribing medication and psychiatric help for people at a higher risk for suicide. There are also community-wide methods to prevent suicide aimed at specific populations, like veterans and teens. The National Institute of Mental Health also maintains an extensive list of suicide prevention programs
