Net zero means cutting carbon emissions to a smaller amount of emissions that can be absorbed and durably stored by nature and other carbon dioxide removal measures, leaving zero surplus in the atmosphere. This, however, does not turn back the clock on climate change. The amount of CO2 already in the atmosphere will persist; net zero is essentially halting increases to higher temperatures.
