National Alliance on Mental Illness calls itself the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization. Its executives include mental health clinicians. Its local affiliates, and national office, pursue an array of advocacy, patient navigation, policy reform and other endeavors. Many of those affiliates, focusing on cultural competency, also have programs specifically addressing mental health concerns of persons of color.

Treatment Advocacy Center, a national nonprofit, focuses on broadening access to care for those with mental illness and has done considerable research and advocacy involving the disproportionate tally of persons with mental illness who wind up in the criminal justice system. The centers research/programs include and focus on:

  • Consequences of non-treatment.
  • Criminalization of mental illness.
  • Taxpayer costs of incarcerating the mentally ill, often ill-advisedly.
  • Psychiatric bed shortages.
  • De-mythologizing the mentally ill as society’s most violence when, in fact, they are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violence.
