The CFR is calculated by dividing the number of deaths caused by a disease by the number of confirmed cases of that disease in each period. The CFR is time and location-dependent and many factors can influence the rate such as age and demographic characteristics, among others. For COVID-19, CFR estimates vary by country depending upon how many people have been tested, the number of those in the population older than 65, the strength of the health system and other factors.
