A story about my mother’s attempt to rescue her granddaughter on a snowy day is a starting off point for a column on the challenges involved in caring for parents and grandparents with dementia or other aging issues. There is no road map to show the changes ahead, and even when their health or abilities decline, they may remain light years ahead of us in other areas. As we balance caregiving with respect, we also should remember to cherish the time we have with them.
