This package was part of a year-long project (non-serialized) exploring different mental disorders, brain science and stigma. The general goal was twofold: first, to humanize the disorder by profiling individuals who could personalize the experience of the illness without sensationalism and secondly, to educate readers by delving into the medical roots of the disorder, its symptoms, associated stigma and available treatment options. This package, like the others in the project, sought to shine a light on mental illness in Shasta County and the available resources locally (e.g., The Brave Faces Portrait Gallery, part of the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency) as well as nationally. Please Note: This feature included a side box of resources for readers that was embedded to the left of the feature but did not carry over during the Online-to-PDF conversion. I did not want to exceed the stated maximum of four related attachments, so I left it out. ALSO: Scripps requires a subscription to access its online content. I’ve included the links with each of the PDFs, but judges may be unable to access the full content without a subscription.
