Freckle, Mole Or Skin Cancer?

Ladies’ Home Journal’s award-winning health content speaks to readers in an intimate, accessible and informed voice by combining real women’s stories in a conversational style with trustworthy medical advice and information. We rely on our Medical Advisory Board and other top experts to interpret the latest health news for women, combined with compelling storytelling. We encourage readers to speak out and support each other, both online and in the magazine. We cover some aspect of skin cancer every year. In 2013 we decided to focus on melanoma, the most dangerous type, since it has grown 705 percent among women under 40, our target audience. To do that, we worked with the Skin Cancer Foundation to find a young woman who had been diagnosed with melanoma. We knew we had the right woman in Melissa Flesher, who was seven months pregnant when, by coincidence, she noticed a dark spot on the back of her leg that she thought was a tick. But it wasn’t; it was an early-stage melanoma. Flesher was lucky it was caught early. We combined her story with some cutting-edge service on melanoma that women need to know.
