Provide a brief synopsis of the story or stories, including any significant findings.

ABC Digital covers breaking news and studies. My job is to quickly find the crux of the story and relay it without bias to the reader. Typically this must be done in less than 1,000 words. – Over-medicated seniors I highlight what a serious problem polypharmia is by putting a human face on it. – Dental Care – Using a real incident I was able to highlight the disparity of dental care for low income families. – NRA – The NRA made mental health the issue in the gun control debate. I brought in top psychology organizations to debate this. – Health $care – Highlighted the morass of personal health insurance by putting a human face on it.

Explain types of documents, data or Internet resources used. Were FOI or public records act requests required? How did this affect the work?

I use embargoed studies, police reports, previous studies, statistical data, transcripts of speeches.

Explain types of human sources used.

No.

Advice to other journalists planning a similar story or project.

If you are covering complex news or studies be sure to understand the topic thoroughly. Try to balance the coverage by stepping back and removing your bias so you can see the issues clearly. Whenever try to put a human spin on your story – it makes news, especially about scientific studies, more relatable. Learn to be succinct but get the main aspects of the story across in your word count.
