Provide a brief synopsis of the story or stories, including any significant findings.

The stories cover a range of issues discussed at medical meetings held in Chicago in 2011: Society for Interventional Radiology (SIR), American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS), American Medical Association (AMA), and Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).

Explain types of documents, data or Internet resources used. Were FOI or public records act requests required? How did this affect the work?

I attended the scientific presentations/posters.

Explain types of human sources used.

I interviewed the lead investigator. I also interviewed additional physicians to obtain perspective on the research.

Follow-up (if any). Have you run a correction or clarification on the report or has anyone come forward to challenge its accuracy? If so, please explain.

No follow-up.

Advice to other journalists planning a similar story or project.

Ask the physicians at the meeting to point out which presentations are likely to be the most interesting. Go where the crowds are and find out why the physician audience is so interested in the topic. While it is good to plan and highlight which scientific sessions you want to cover at a meeting, be willling to scrap your favorite story if the data aren’t robust and the physicians give the study a lukewarm reception. Ask physicians what they think should be covered from the meeting.
