Acting on a tip from inside the government, I exposed the fact that the only office responsible for investigating fraud in federally funded research had been leaderless for more than a year. This important office was being neglected. As a result of my story, HHS finally advertised the job.

as a result of my article, which was reprinted and widely distributed through many outlets, include the scientist, HHS was shamed into finally advertising the job and acknowledging the vacuum at the top. I continue to pressure them for information on the search process.

7. Follow-up (if any). Have you run a correction or clarification on the report or has anyone come forward to challenge its accuracy? If so, please explain.

nope!

8. Advice to other journalists planning a similar story or project.

Having sources that trust you is essential. I had a good relationship so I knew when the previous director was secretly retired, and that his job was sitting open. Also knowing the agencies you cover and who leads them.
