On Nov. 5, 2009, a gunman opened fire at the Soldier Readiness Center at Fort Hood, Texas. Thirteen people were killed and 33 others were wounded. The tragic irony is that the accused shooter is Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, a psychiatrist who received his medical and psychiatric training at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences (USUHS) and Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC). Hasan allegedly killed and wounded many behavioral health professionals scheduled to deploy to ease the suffering of service members in Iraq and Afghanistan. (A sidebar to this story listing their names and some information about them was posted on Psychiatric Times’ Web site.)
