The posts discussed how the reps used unapproved materials to convince doctors that Pfizer’s Viracept was superior to other AIDS medications. Reps were also urged to skirt rules governing the appropriate use of professional speakers for continuing medical education programs. These activities took place at a time when the pharmaceutical industry has come under increased scrutiny for improperly promoting medications to doctors. And just prior to the start of the series, Pfizer acknowledged to Pharmalot that in internal investigation into marketing practices was under way.
