This four-part series examines the lives and careers of four prominent schizophrenia researchers: Will Carpenter; Nancy Andreasen; Thomas McGlashan; and Fuller Torrey. The series offers a look at the human side of psychiatric research, detailing what attracted each of these four to research in schizophrenia, while outlining their most important contributions and publications. The cumulative effect of the series is to provide an overview of all the major trends in schizophrenia research, with each of the four articles highlighting a specific area of ongoing and future research: the search for drugs to treat cognition (Carpenter); the use of imaging techniques in combination with genetics to understand the nature of discrete symptoms (Andreasen); psychosocial treatments and prevention of schizophrenia (McGlashan); and the search for infectious causes and a vaccine (Torrey).
