The two-day series began with a lead article about the continuing nursing shortage, how local hospitals and colleges are working together to address it, and the significant bottlenecks that remain. Colleges are turning away many qualified applicants because of lack of faculty and classroom space. One sidebar focused on the fact that many of the new nurses entering the field are doing so as a second career. A second sidebar dealt with an initiative to use nurses’ time more effectively. Many photos accompanied the first day of the series. The second day was comprised of two photo essays, one of a longtime emergency room nurse and the other of a new nurse at work. On-line content include a multimedia presentation and four slide shows. They can be viewed at: www.theday.com.
