Alan Cassels (pharmaceutical policy research, University of Victoria, British Columbia) came to Health Journalism 2009's "Statistics, conclusions, limitations: Reporting on medical studies" panel to deliver a presentation titled "Is the story disease mongering? Where to go for sources? Is the treatment even available?" In it, Cassels defines "disease mongering" and gives some of its classic characteristics. He then gives a list of questions reporters should ask in order to direct their stories into more representative channels.
