John Hopkins University will hold its fifth annual Social Determinants of Health Symposium on race, racism and the healing of Baltimore. This year’s event comes one year after the death of Freddie Gray sparked unrest in the heart of the city. Presented by JHU’s Urban Health Institute, representatives from throughout the university, from faculty to students, will discuss urgent health issues facing the city with local leaders, residents and others. The event will also examine the related role of criminal justice and education systems as well as income inequality, violence and racism. Organizers note: “In Baltimore, people living just five miles apart can have a 20-year difference in life expectancy due to these conditions.”
