In the more than seven decades since community water fluoridation efforts were launched across America, scores of studies have supported the safety and effectiveness of optimally fluoridated water in reducing tooth decay. But most water supplies in the U.S. are controlled locally. Laws and ordinances governing water fluoridation are often passed at the community level.
These programs are routinely supported by local health officials but they often face strong opposition from detractors whose tactics of sowing fear and doubt can shape media coverage as well as public opinion to the detriment of public health. Our guest, pediatric dentist Johnny Johnson, who is president of the American Fluoridation Society, will update reporters on fluoride research and debates that may be coming to their communities.
