The Association for Gun Violence Reporters
A nonprofit under The Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting that connects reporters covering gun violence reporting to expert contacts and offers story ideas, resources and access to a community of fellow journalists reporting on gun violence.

Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma
This has long been a go-to resource for reporters who cover traumatic events. Based at Columbia University, Dart has an exhaustive list of topics related to trauma, including the trauma caused by firearm violence. Its suicide topic page includes, for example, a “toolkit” for navigating this tricky but important subject.

Journalist Playbook
A resource guide and toolkit for reporters covering domestic violence. The resource, produced by a team of journalists and survivors of domestic violence, makes the case for why reporters need to do better, more in-depth coverage of the topic. The playbook is broken up into six categories: safety, solutions, sensitivity, transparency, expertise and diversity. Each includes practical tips for reporters.

The guide features research and data on domestic violence, a list of terminologies, a source directory and explains how it intersects with other issues, including gun violence.

Journalist Trauma Support Network
This is a national community of qualified therapists trained to care for trauma-impacted journalists in the U.S. The program also provides therapists with cultural competence, data security training, peer support and referral pathways.

Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting
The Center was founded to explore the idea that better gun violence reporting can improve public understanding and support effective programs and policies to prevent shootings. A part of the Center’s mission is to determine whether changing the practice of news reporting can prevent gun violence. The Center provides tips for better reporting practices and supports research on how the news media can do better when covering gun violence.

The Survivor Connection
This group helps journalists produce more impactful stories on gun violence by making the “violence survivor community more readily accessible.” The program comes from the Philadelphia Center for Gun Violence Reporting and promises to facilitate more empathetic, ethical and impactful news reporting in Philadelphia by bridging a gap between journalists and the survivor community. The organization hopes to eventually expand the program to other cities.

The Trace
This nonprofit news organization was founded in 2015 and focuses entirely on firearm violence. It focuses on solutions and casts a skeptical eye on “easy answers.” Essential reading for anyone interested in reporting on this topic.

Washington Post police shooting tracker
The newspaper has been tracking police shootings since 2015 and publishing them on this database. The details of each killing include the race of the deceased, the circumstances of the shooting, whether the person was armed and whether the person was experiencing a mental health crisis.
