More than two dozen vaccines are under development, and dozens of trials are underway to investigate whether any experimental or existing medications, such as hydroxychloroquine, can be repurposed to treat COVID-19 patients.
This April 4 Medscape article, for example, features a table of more than 50 clinical trials for COVID-19. But that’s only a selection of trials and undoubtedly will become dated quickly. But several online trackers can make it at least a little easier to keep tabs on the big picture.
The sites below each have trackers for clinical trials related to COVID-19. It can be unclear in some cases a study is complete, and some trials may have inadvertent bias depending on who is collecting the information and how. But monitoring all of them may make it easier not to miss a trial:
- The Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford has a page with a holistic analysis of 382 registered trials. Its Trials Tracker page includes a spreadsheet with more than 700 entries.
- A collaboration of Cytel Inc. and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has produced a Global Coronavirus COVID-19 Clinical Trial Tracker that includes a map of where trials are taking place. The interactive interface allows users to filter according to treatment and country. A spreadsheet at the bottom allows sorting by multiple fields, including the trial’s status and disease severity.
- Though less easy to search visually, the Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society is updating weekly its COVID-19 Therapeutics Tracker, which can make it a good place to get a sense on an ongoing basis of what’s happening.

- The Cell Trials Data website has a page with a downloadable Excel spreadsheet file for all COVID-19 clinical trials current as of the posted date.
- The Milken Institute has a PDF version of its COVID-19 Treatment and Vaccine Tracker. The lower right corner of each page notes when the tracker was last updated.
