Violence interrupter

  • Firearm Violence

A violence interrupter is a person who can help de-escalate situations that could turn violent. Also called “credible messengers,” interrupters are able to intervene thanks to their relationships and experiences in a community. Violence interruption programs are a key part of a public health approach to gun violence. Violence interrupters identify the people at risk of being involved in a violent act and intercede to provide mentorship, teach nonviolent conflict management and shift group norms that encourage or perpetuate violent conflict.
