Tiahrt Amendment

  • Firearm Violence

The Tiahrt Amendment was a rider in a 2003 congressional appropriations bill. The amendment, named for its sponsor, U.S. Rep. Todd Tiahrt, prohibits the ATF from releasing information about crime guns to the public and prevents the agency from requiring gun dealers to submit their inventories to law enforcement while they’re in business. It also requires the FBI to destroy all successful background check records within 24 hours.
