Employers and health plans sometimes set a certain price limit (the reference price) when reimbursing employees or plan members for health care services. Any employee can shop for a health care service and pay whatever rate the provider or hospital charges, but the employer or health plan will not reimburse the employee or plan member any amount above the reference price.
