MERS is a coronavirus that emerged in 2012 in Saudi Arabia and subsequently spread to several other countries. It has the highest fatality rate of all known coronaviruses that cause human disease, ranging between 30-40% of infected patients. Though some MERS cases still occur, infections are currently very rare and usually only occur in Middle Eastern countries.
