Microplastics are small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long which can be harmful to humans, wildlife and plantlife. As an emerging field of study, not a lot is known about microplastics and their impacts yet.
Microplastics come from a variety of sources, including from larger plastic debris that degrades into smaller and smaller pieces. Microplastics’ ubiquity in the environment, combined with preliminary findings from human cell and animal studies over the past decade, have led to urgent calls for more research and regulation.
