Maternal mortality ratio is reported as the number of maternal mortality deaths per 100,000 live births when such a death is defined as while pregnant or within 42 days of the end of pregnancy. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization use this ratio when making international comparisons of the effectiveness of health care systems.
