The federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services uses the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) to pay for health care services delivered in most large acute care hospitals for inpatient stays. Under the IPPS, CMS pays a case rate for each patient based on the patient’s diagnosis.
