The Gun Control Act imposed stricter licensing and regulation on the firearms industry, established new categories of firearms offenses and prohibited the sale of firearms to felons and other prohibited persons. The act also imposed the first federal jurisdiction over “destructive devices,” including bombs, mines, grenades and similar devices. The legislation was sparked by the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
